There are a lot of Nigerian women out there working so hard, making sure that every single day takes their dreams and aspirations to the next level. A good number of these women are becoming part of our daily conversation by the way of their services or products. In 2016, for instance, Filmmaker, Kemi Adetiba took her game a notch higher with the making of the box-office film, the Wedding Party currently screening in cinemas across the country. The movie has put her name in the record books as one of Nigeria’s successful film directors in 2016.
We watched some of these ladies closely and given the marvellous performances in 2016, we are convinced that their brands will grow stronger in 2017. Here’s LC’s list of women whose brands will soar in 2017.
1. Kemi Adetiba
Fresh from the making of her hit debut feature length film, the Wedding Party, Kemi Adetiba is a brand on the rising and to watch out for in 2017.
Kemi Adetiba cut her teeth in the creative industry as she directed the music video for the then, hip hop world awards theme song, ‘A price to die for’, featuring Banky W, rappers M.I and Kel and El Dee the Don and among others.
Five years down the line, Adetiba has taken her trade a notch higher and directed her debut feature-length movie, another critically acclaimed project.
She also made history by joining other Nigerian films to screen at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8, 2016. Watch out for the brand, Kemi Adetiba in 2017.
2. Arese Ugwu
Arese is the Founder of smartmoneyafrica.org a personal finance platform for the African millennial. She also the author of the wave-making book on personal finance, the Smart Money Woman. We are convinced that Arese had a brilliant outing in 2016 given the awesome reviews and positive reception her book got in the electronic and social media and Judging by her book signing events, Arese Ugwu as a brand will grow even stronger in 2017.
3. Toke Makinwa
Toke Makinwa took over the internet in 2016. She kept social media buzzing for a greater part of the year, her Instagram post made headlines on some popular blogs including LC. We even wrote a lighthearted article on HOW TO DOMINATE NIGERIAN TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS using Toke as a case study. Toke Makinwa has discovered over the years how to remain relevant and buzzing in the media. This year will not be an exception, we expect her brand to grow in leaps and bounds in 2017.
4. Linda Ikeji
Linda Ikeji has dominated Nigerian blogosphere for some years with her ever growing brand, the Linda Ikeji Blog. The launch of Linda Ikeji Social was one of her high moments in 2016. The brand is expected to grow bigger in 2017.
5. Adesua Etomi
Fresh from her lead role in the Wedding Party film, Adesua Etomi can safely be described as Nigerian screen queen of 2016. This came on the heels of her winning AMVCA 2016 Best Actress for her role as Muna, in “Falling.”. Adesua capped 2016 with the Headies, Nigeria’s foremost Music Awards and Recognition platform. She co-hosted the event with Falz the bahd guy, another successful brand in 2016. We believe Adesua will replicate and even surpass her successes of 2016.
6. DJ Cuppy
Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, also known as DJ Cuppy, is a Nigerian International DJ & music producer and the daughter of Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola. In 2016, DJ Cuppy took on Nigeria and indeed the rest of Africa by performing at A-list gigs and events. Her ambitious tour of eight countries across Africa put together as reality show has been airing on Fox Life TV. In 2016, it was Cuppy Takes Africa who knows what she will be taking on in 2017. One thing is certain, the brand will grow stronger in 2017.
