The Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Mr Liu Kan, on Monday said that Chinese in Nigeria had joined others worldwide in celebrating the Chinese New Year.
Liu said, that while so many Chinese in Nigeria had travelled home for the celebration, some were currently celebrating the Spring Festival in Nigeria.
“The Chinese New Year, known as the Spring Festival, is the most important festival of the Chinese people. The Spring Festival is the beginning of a new year in Chinese lunar calendar. During spring, wherever Chinese are, they go back to their hometown to celebrate and reunite with their families. But because of official duties in Nigeria, we have decided to come together as Chinese in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria to celebrate
with our Nigerian friends,’’ he said.
The envoy said that while he brought together some Chinese nationals at the Consulate’s Premises, 520 Chinese employees of HUAWEI
celebrated “joyfully’’ with their friends and colleagues at the Oriental Hotels, Lekki.
According to him, the New Year is a period for Chinese to celebrate the past year’s hard work, have a good rest and feast with family and
friends, as well as look forward to a more prosperous New Year.
Liu said that in China currently, families of long relationship and affiliation would sit around tables, chat and laugh over different Chinese dishes and drinks in celebration of the season.
He also said that there would also be traditional celebrations of the festival, including eating reunion dinner with family, giving red
envelopes, firecrackers, new clothes and decorations of houses.
