TURN THE TABLES
“Why am I still waiting?” Miss Ukata asked mildly when both young men stood before her desk again, two weeks later; her expression was of a smug person who held all the trump cards.
Jojo swallowed and glanced nervously at Alex who seemed, surprisingly, unperturbed.
“I…err…” Jojo stammered when all Alex did was stare fixedly at the woman.
“Because you asked me to call you today, so I did,” Alex replied calmly, shocking both his friend and Miss Ukata, whose head swiveled to him when he spoke.
Her eyebrow went up as she silently considered him, while wondering where he’d gotten confidence from. The boy might be huge for his age but his face still carried his youth. She didn’t understand what was going on, Akwaowo had been a scared rat two weeks ago but at that moment, he looked like he knew something she didn’t know.
“Could you excuse us, Jojo?” Alex asked courteously, without looking at his friend, his eyes remained on Miss Ukata.
Jojo hesitated; his gaze swiveled from Miss Ukata to his friend and back, all the while wondering if it would be right to honour his friend’s request. Alex felt rather than saw Jojo’s uncertainty, “Go,” he reiterated and his friend bolted from the room.
Alex maintained the silent battle of wills for a few seconds before marching to the door and locking it with a sharp twist of the key.
When he turned back to the table, his eyes remained calm as he stared at the woman behind it, “I’d advise you pull off your glasses,” he said and began walking slowly but predatorily towards her, “…put it in its case and drop it in your bag…” his voice slowed to a whisper at this point and was happy to find that Miss Ukata seemed to have lost her cool, she was flustered.
And it wasn’t in a bad way. She was breathless as Alex stood tall before her with a fly that was flat minutes ago but was now protruding with his erection.
He lowered his eyelids to seductive slits; he bit his pink lower lip and used a long, forefinger to drag softly over the swell of her breast.
“Akwaowo,” she began but had to stop and clear her throat as it had suddenly gone hoarse.
“Sshh, darling, relax. You might have to cover your mouth because…” he squeezed a globe of her breast and went slowly on his knees, his eyes slowly roving over her body as though he was about to devour her.
He could feel her pulse beat wildly in the alcove of her knees as his hands caressed their way up her thighs. He squeezed her thighs above the knees and moved higher, slowly taking her flare skirt and exposing her girdle. Alex leaned forward and bit the skin just before the elastics of the girdle and was pleased to hear her gasp loudly.
After creating a game plan that would guarantee he and his friend got his admission, Alex had gone ahead to practice, over the few days before his two weeks deadline, he realized the amount of information one could get from the internet.
While trying his boundaries, most of the time when Isaac and Jojo had gone to the shop and he was left at home for a while, he learnt that just the memory of Nse and what he would love to do to her, sexually, could turn him on at will. He realized also that thinking about Nse’s disappointed look and her tear stained face when she’d discovered her friend seducing him, could turn him off at will too.
The article and several others taught him that to be dominant in a sexual relation was to be able to control one’s sexual urges, desires and pleasures. So, as opposed to what Miss Ukata had done to him back at the village, this was payback and plain strategy.
Her breath became heavy and loud in the silence of the office as he slowly pulled down her girdle while dropping tiny, wet kisses on every exposed skin. When he pulled them off, he noticed the wet patch on the area of her white panties over her vagina lips.
“Open your shirt for me,” he quietly commanded while reaching up and pressing his thump on that wet patch, eliciting a moan from the older woman.
“No sound, madam,” he instructed in quiet command. “Why is your shirt still unbuttoned?” he asked with a slight tone of anger colouring his voice while his thump never stopped circling the wet spot and making it wetter.
With shaky hands, Miss Ukata reached for the buttons of her shirt and began unbuttoning them uncoordinatedly.
“Touch them,” he whispered when she finally spread them open.
Her eyes were clouded with desire, she reached hesitantly and touched her breasts while Alex slipped a finger into her wet vagina from the sides of her white panties. She moaned quite loudly and Alex stopped moving his finger even though her hips were almost out of the chair in her aim to get more.
“Please…” she pleaded, her hands squeezing her breasts continuously.
“Climb on the table,” he commanded and she scrambled to obey. Alex got to his feet, watched as she lay on her desk on top of the files, some falling off the other side. He spread her legs, pulled her pants down her thighs and went two fingers deep and thumb on the clitoris on her.
She thrashed and gasped, her hands finally flying to her mouth to curb her moans. Alex watched her dispassionately as he worked his fingers in a rhythm, in and out of her until she reached her release.
Alex pulled out, cleaned his fingers on her skirt while she tried to catch her breath. He mentally called the image of Nse crying and looking at him accusingly and his hard on deflated in a flash.
“I will give you pleasure but won’t fuck you until our names are out. Call me when you need me,” he said and walked out, not caring that the woman had yet to rearrange her cloths.
Jojo started from where he’d been leaning on the veranda, “Alex?”
“I need to wash my hands,” he declared stonily and that was the only thing Jojo could get out of him. He withdrew into a quiet shell that even Eka couldn’t pull him from. She asked Jojo countlessly and he denied knowing what was wrong with his friend, only advising that Eka not disturb him until his funk was over.
Eka was worried for her friend. She had never seen him act the way he was. He still went for his deliveries, so barring questions about the purchase’s list, he said nothing else.
Alex knew he was causing worry among those who cared about him but he couldn’t stop the silent self recriminations for what he had done and what he would do for admissions into the University.
He didn’t want to repeat the terrible trend and be known for sex in university. But with Miss Ukata in the school, he feared for his future. He wasn’t sure how to stop it. The strategy he’d executed on Miss Ukata wasn’t sure to last; he feared she would see through his bluff at their next meeting.
As though conjured by his mind, a text tone pinged on his phone. He looked and found a summons to Miss Ukata’s office. Alex stared at it forlornly; fear racketing in his chest as he wondered what would happen the next day.
The fear almost paralyzed him when he recalled how scary she had been at the village, but he shook his head and decided to follow up with more strategies he had researched online. He immediately typed out a message and smiled.
He arrived ten minutes before the scheduled time. He barged into the office without knocking; a quick scan assured him they were alone.
“Stand that way,” he barked, having caught her arranging her desk with her back to the door.
He hadn’t expected that she’d obey as he locked the door but she did.
Alex pressed his engorged fly to her buttocks and she arched her back and moaned. “Did you do what I asked?” he whispered in her ear as his hand travelled the length of her naked thigh.
When his fingers met with no obstruction in between her legs, he smiled in satisfaction, she’d listened. The whole process went as it had gone the last time, though he progressed into sucking her breasts; he made sure she climaxed and then walked out without saying anything.
Text messages flooded his phone that night and the next day. Apparently, Miss Ukata was being transferred to another school. Alex had no idea how true this was but hope bloomed in his heart anyway. He ignored the text messages for two weeks while making sure he got admissions updates from new friends and other junior officers at the university.
All he had to do was ignore Miss Ukata for two more weeks, the length of time it would take the first admissions list to be pasted. It wasn’t a full proof plan but Alex was sticking to it. The only time he answered the woman’s threatening text was to remind her that he would only have sex with her when their names had made the list.
And it did.
Ecstatically, Jojo and a shocked Alex arrived school in the morning to meet a crowd of other young hopefuls at the admissions board where a lengthy array of lists had been pasted by faculties and departments.
It took a while for them to find their faculty and department and then their hearts thumbed in unison as they torturously searched for their names.
They were jostled as other candidates pushed to find their names. Their hearts jolted every time someone yelled happily at having found their names. They listened to other people make calls of having found their friend’s names and yet, Jojo and Alex kept searching.
The faculty of Social Sciences had five departments and those departments were terribly saturated. For the department of Geography, Jojo had to go through seven lists and annoyingly, the list hadn’t been typed alphabetically. So, like Alex, they had to almost place a finger on each list and slide it down while scrolling with their eyes so that they don’t miss their names.
Alex refused to wonder what he would do if his name didn’t appear, he was more worried for Jojo. But then, when all hope had been lost, they found their names at the bottom of their respective lists, it almost looked as though they had been added on second thought.
Jojo screamed his happiness, hugging his friend and crying in the process. Alex couldn’t express his joy but he was relieved. As a man of integrity, a character he prided himself of, especially as a delivery guy, he knew he had to keep to the deal with Miss Ukata.
When other successful candidates raced happily home to break the news, an act Jojo had suggested, an act that would end in drinking the afternoon away, Alex shook his head and advised that they begin the registration process rather.
“Seriously?” Jojo was shocked at his friend’s non excitement, but then he recalled the things he probably had to do to secure their success.
“What better time than now when others are thinking of celebrating. Don’t forget, a second list will be out by the end of the week, that’s a larger crowd to contain with at the bank and accounts section when changing the teller to receipts.”
Jojo was impressed. He also recalled that despite being a ladies’ man back at their secondary school, Alex had been a stickler for early processes. He had preferred to put everything in place before fun and it had always worked for them as he had always made sure his friends did the same.
“You are right, but I don’t have my school fees. I’ll have to visit the village to get it from my parents.”
“We aren’t paying fees today,” Alex muttered while standing in the midst of the ever moving traffic of the university to craft a text message to Miss Ukata, informing her of his visit to her house.
“So, what do we do?” Jojo asked, his eyes not missing the nuances of Alex’s expression; guilt weighed on his chest for his friend and the fact that his handsomeness and endowments had become a sort of punishment for him.
Alex stared at his phone until it blinked a ‘delivered’ notification, then he looked up at his waiting friend and at the teeming amount of students and recently admitted candidates and sighed.
“My department is nearer,” he said, pointing at a building across the tarred road from the VC’s office which was close to the Admissions Board.
They started walking, “I’ll get my authority to pay slip and whatever else they have to give and then we’ll go to yours and do same.”
Jojo was grateful for having Alex as a friend but he didn’t know how to express his gratitude to him without bringing up the obviously toxic reminder of Miss Ukata.
And as he had predicted, only a handful of newly admitted students were thinking like Alex. It took a minute to confirm his name in the department’s list, sign and collect his slip and a list of prerequisites before he became a full student.
The Geography department had a great distance from the Economics building. It was a shock for Jojo to discover that his department shared a building with Education. Alex finally chuckled under his breath at the preposterous expression on Jojo’s face.
Jojo collected his things and when they read through the list, they realized that every new candidate had been given three weeks to pay their fees and complete registration. They hurried back home, broke the news and while Jojo was preparing to visit the village the next day, Alex took a deep breath, slipped out and proceeded to locate the address Miss Ukata had sent almost immediately after his earlier text message.
She lived at an estate located in the same area as the Akwa Ibom State Police Headquarters. Her house was beautiful and Alex wondered how much she made to live in such luxury. As usual, he waited at her door, looked down his blue respectable dress shirt, worn untucked over brown slacks and sneakers.
He wasn’t admiring his cloths as much as he was trying to bring up Nse’s face in the throes of passion, at least, what he imagined it would be, but his efforts only brought her tear stained face to him and so, his fly remained flat.
What’s happening, he silently wondered. After two minutes of standing in front of Miss Ukata’s door without knocking, he was beginning to feel like a thief, so he knocked, silently deciding that he would definitely be aroused when she got naked. Not getting hard before knocking only reduced the effect of his entrance…
“Yes, how can I help you?” a deep, very manly voice that belonged to a matured man, of Miss Ukata’s age, asked.
Alex felt like a stunned rabbit in front of approaching headlights. “I…er…” his voice got stuck in his throat while his mind whirled with the debilitating situation that would have occurred if the man had opened the door to a young guy with a raging erection.
“I’m here to see Miss Ukata,” he replied calmly and tried his best not to look guilty under the shrewd gaze of the older man. Deep down he wondered if he had missed the address, then he mentally shook his head, she had aptly described her house and hers was the only house with a red gate. And her car was parked out front anyway.
“Who are you?” the suspicion increased in the man’s tone. Alex didn’t blame him, whoever he was, not when someone of his 6ft plus height and obvious handsomeness stood before a single woman’s house; Alex suspected that Miss Ukata must have been cheating on her boo.
The realization caused a bubble of humour in his stomach and his mouth twitched as he imagined exposing Miss Ukata for the wicked bitch she was.
“I’m a student at the University of Uyo,” Alex replied respectfully, “She asked me to see her and get a check for my school fees, Sir. I am one of the orphans Miss Ukata has been helping. My brother, Joshua, couldn’t make it because he was late for his part time job. I was able to come because I am on the night shift.”
Alex couldn’t believe he was lying this way. He didn’t know how it would turn out but, he knew, he wasn’t leaving this place without a bank check. Miss Ukata might as well pay for using him.
Both he and the man at the door heard a gasp, Miss Ukata had arrived the scene.
“Good evening, Ma,” Alex enthused as his eyes met her scared ones over the man’s shoulders. It was obvious that she was wondering what Alex had told the man.
“Honey,” the man turned to her with a smile.
“Huh?” she gasped again, definitely looking scared. Apparently, she’d been in the bathroom, Alex was sure her heart was pounding heavily beneath the folds of her bath robe, good, he thought in smug satisfaction.
“I didn’t know you were into charity,” the man asked in obvious pleasure, and a confused look immediately appeared on her face.
Of course, she would be confused, Alex thought, there was no charitable bone in Miss Ukata’s body.
“Come in boy,” the man said and widened the door. Alex stepped in to luxury.
The apartment wasn’t big but it was tastefully furnished.
“Welcome, I’m Miss Ukata’s fiancé. I’ve been at the U.S for a decade,” the man enthused and chuckled, seeming more open now that Alex wasn’t a threat. It was at his pronouncement of where he’d been that Alex realized that his speech had a bit of the American roll to it.
“It’s so nice to meet you, Sir. Welcome, Sir,” Alex said respectfully and made no move to sit down, rather, he stood hesitantly by the door, further endearing himself to the man and looking entirely believable as a poor orphan despite his giant height and beauty.
“Sweetheart,” Ben the fiancé called and went towards Miss Ukata, hugging her as though she had been awarded for saving humanity and bringing world peace. “I didn’t know. I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have listened to…”
“You should be resting, Ben, you just arrived,” Miss Ukata broke into his speech smoothly and it occurred to Alex that she might have tried to reach him if Ben had arrived impromptu.
While they murmured in the corner of the sitting room, Alex slid out his previously silenced phone and tapped the screen. He saw twenty three missed calls from Miss Ukata and had to bite his lip to curb his laugh.
He pocketed his phone as Ben the American fiancé was telling Miss Ukata to give ‘the poor boy’ the checks so that he would take her out for dinner. The look on Miss Ukata’s face was hilarious. She was in a fix and didn’t know how to get out of it. Meanwhile, Alex remained standing until Ben turned.
“My word, forgive my manners, please sit. Honey, go bring your check book…”
“Oh, I forgot it at the office…” she blurted and swallowed while her eyes travelled from Ben to Alex and back to Ben.
Alex had no idea how she managed to convey her threat through mean eyes and then when she looked at Ben, her eyes would become soft.
Ben sighed and turned to look at Alex who immediately morphed his expression into extreme sadness; two could play the game, he thought.
“Sweetheart, you don’t really need the check, just use your bank app, I saw one on your phone while you were in the bathroom.”
Alex watched as Miss Ukata practically died on the spot when Ben spoke of having been on her phone. She wrapped her arms round her middle, basically below her breasts, holding herself as though she didn’t want her body to disintegrate.
“Err…” Miss Ukata was speechless.
“How much is this fee?” Ben asked, pulling out his phone.
“Eighty thousand naira each, excluding hostel fees, we pay that with savings from our job,” Alex explained humbly.
“Wow! Why then do people abroad describe the Nigerian youth as always waiting for hand outs?” he seemed really impressed.
“I’ll get my phone, I’ll do it!” Miss Ukata snapped, the words were directed more to Alex than her fiancé. “But I can’t guarantee I have the complete money.”
“Sweetheart!” Ben called and chuckled amiably with a fond look for her as she marched out of the room, “I recall how independent she’d been during our college days.”
“You went to school together?” Alex asked with feigned interest and awe.
Ben nodded, “We did, before my father declared that I needed a second and masters degree abroad and then I found a job and there was never time to return home to my sweetheart,” he explained wistfully, conversing with Alex as though he was his long time friend. Jojo would never believe this, Alex thought.
“Believe it or not,” Ben whispered conspiringly to Alex, “She was never charitable when I knew her. It’s good that she has changed, since, well, she would never be able to fit into my family if she isn’t. I’m advanced in age and would love to settle down. I’ve not really been on the dating scene, so, it was convenient to have my former love still single. After the marriage, we’ll relocate to the U.S and start our lives.”
Alex swallowed everything Ben said. Apparently, he had even done good to the terrible Miss Ukata by portraying her as a charitable person, contrary to untoward stories that Ben’s Nigerian friends must have fed him on his return.
“My network is bad,” Miss Ukata said on return, now she was dressed in jeans trousers and t-shirt, her figure was beautifully exposed and Ben admired it from his seat while Alex realized that she’d spent the whole time in the room figuring out how not to give him the money asked.
“So, did you both attend the University of Uyo?” Alex asked suddenly, his expression determinedly on Miss Ukata who frowned and wondered what he was up to. Don’t worry, Ma, he thought, wait for it.
Ben nodded, sliding down on the comfortable leather seat as he prepared to launch into conversation, “Yes, we both did. That was when Lasisi had just been appointed the Vice Chancellor.”
“Lecturers and staffs must have been filled with integrity then,” Alex commented wistfully, but turned mean eyes on Miss Ukata, who straightened her height when she realized where this conversation was going.
Ben didn’t disappoint, “Are you saying staffs and lecturers aren’t…”
“No Sir, integrity is dead, even in women,” Alex added sadly, shaking his head and looking down.
Ben sat up in his seat, “Women?”
“I have text messages…”
“Oh, my network is back! Give me your account number Akwaowo,” Miss Ukata suddenly exclaimed and Alex rattled off his account number while wondering if Ben hadn’t noticed the flustered nature of her voice.
“Can I see the text me…”
“Have you completed your registrations, you and Joshua?” Miss Ukata asked grasping for straws to deter the messages conversation.
“We can’t complete the registration until the fees have been paid, Ma,” he replied respectfully.
“So, you mean a female lecturer propositioned you?” Ben asked with wide eye wonder.
Alex looked down forlornly and pretended guilt, “I…I slept with her twice before…”
“Jesus, this is absolutely unnecessary!” Miss Ukata exclaimed, looking entirely uncomfortable.
Just then his phone vibrated, he took it out of his pocket and immediately looked grateful as he saw the one hundred and sixty thousand naira bank alert.
“Thank you so much, Ma. Even though the amount isn’t complete, I will make sure I work extra hours to complete it. I’ll pay for Joshua’s fee first though, I can complete mine later. Thank you so much, God bless you, Ma,” Alex enthused while Ben still sat at the edge of his seat waiting to hear the complete story.
“How old were you when this happened?” Ben prodded softly, seeming to commiserate with the abuse Alex had faced with the faceless female lecturer.
“I was…I was just seventeen…”
“Akwaowo don’t do this…” Miss Ukata pleaded fearfully.
“Did you report this?” Ben asked indignantly, “My God, you were just a child.”
Alex nodded as though agreeing with him, even though, he was a couple of feet taller than Ben.
“Miss Ukata saved me,” he whispered and feigned to wipe tears from his eyes. Simultaneously, both men looked at her, Ben with love and Alex with smug.
“Wow, sweetheart, you really are an angel,” Ben said with a smile and relief on his face, as though Alex was his brother that had been saved.
Miss Ukata couldn’t speak, she just swallowed hard and nodded. Even the smile on her face was forced and looked like a grimace of pain rather than pleasure at being praised for good works.
Ben turned suddenly, “I like you, young man. Since my woman couldn’t complete the amount of your fees, let me add something to it for you and your brother. Give me your account number…”
“Sweetheart,” Miss Ukata called in a shocked but loving tone as she hurried to seat by his side, “You don’t have to do that; I’ll complete it later.”
“Darling, I understand your independence and I love you for it,” he said this and kissed her cheek, “But these boys have suffered and they need to, at least, have complete college fees. We are getting married and moving to the U.S at once, you will definitely not remember them in the whirlwind of wedding planning we’ll be experiencing in the next few weeks.”
At this point, anymore protests from her would have been suspicious, so Miss Ukata silently sat as her fiancé transferred more money to Alex, who couldn’t contain his elation at receiving as extra hundred thousand naira.
“I’m so grateful, Sir! May your marriage be fruitful, Sir.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Ben waved his gratitude away, “I wish I could give you more. Give me your number…”
“But, my love…” Miss Ukata touched his arm but didn’t know how to word her obvious dismay at the turn of the situation.
“It’s okay, darling. I will be able to help him more when we get to the U.S, and if you ever get disturbed by another lecturer, Akwaowo, seeing as you are painfully handsome, I need you to call me immediately and I’ll be able to make sure you get justice!” Ben finished passionately.
“But, Sir, you will be abroad,” Alex pointed out.
“Don’t worry, I have people here. I’ll even be able to arrange for employment for you once you’ve completed your degree.”
Alex enthused his gratitude and rushed forward to hug Ben after they’d exchanged numbers. He was just pretending, he knew how devious Miss Ukata was and was sure that his number on Ben’s phone would suddenly disappear but he wasn’t bothered, he had gotten more than he had bargained for anyway.
His eyes caught her eyes over Ben’s shoulder as he hugged him and Alex couldn’t stop himself, he stuck out his tongue at her in a very juvenile move.
Then, he went towards her and hugged her too, making it look like a son embracing his mother by doing it sideways, but his hand at her back, slid down and surreptitiously pinched her buttocks.
“Congratulations on your marriage, again,” Alex enthused as he made his way to the door and Ben held it open for him.
By the time Alex got a tricycle to get home, his account balance read a whooping four hundred and eighty thousand naira!
